Fended Off FAMU, 1-0; Fell Late to FSU, 4-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Florida softball (7-3) pulled through late against Florida A&M (2-9), 1-0, to grab its first win away from home this season, but came up just short late at No. 6 Florida State (10-3), 4-3, on Wednesday evening.

The Ospreys were knotted in a scoreless battle against the Rattlers through six innings of play, until a sac-fly from Abi Annett brought in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Izzy Kelly dominated with her second complete game of the year to finish off the 1-0 shutout win.

UNF held their own later in the day against FSU, as they faced two deficits in the game and came back both times to tie it back up late. A solo home run from the Seminoles in the top of the seventh put them back in the lead and a third time was not the charm in what was a close battle at Joanne Graf Field.

For the first time this season, runs came at a premium for the Ospreys, but a sac-fly by Annett to score Savannah Channell sealed the deal for their first game in Tallahassee.

Behind the Line Score

Kayla Harper and Logan Jackson each reached base in the first, but three outs from the Rattlers started the game scoreless.
Much like the first, two Ospreys made it to the bases in the second inning, but with two outs already on the board, they couldn't bring the base runners home after a fly-out.
Kelly went back-to-back inning without a hit, as she went three up and three down in the first and took out the side after a hit by pitch in the second.
Chloe Culp, the former Seminole, was able to pick up a single in the third, but couldn't score in the inning.
A defensive game continued as the game saw no runs and only four hits combined heading into the seventh inning.
After being walked to start the seventh, Channell advanced to third to set up a sac-fly score that was hit by Annett.
Three more outs in the seventh from the Ospreys notched a 1-0 victory and a complete-game shutout for Kelly.

GAME 2 | UNF 3, FSU 4

A back-and-forth game with scoring late in the game gave the Ospreys a tied game heading to the bottom of the sixth, but a solo shot from FSU was too much to overcome in the 4-3 loss on the road.

Behind the Line Score

Harper drew a walk at the top of the first, but three consecutive outs left her on bases.
Ashley Connor forced three straight fly-outs for her first inning in the circle against FSU.
The sophomore followed up with another pair of fly-outs and a groundout to keep things scoreless through two.
Jackson went unassisted for all three outs in the third, including a line-out double play, to help Ashley get through three innings with no hits allowed.
Shannon Glover picked up the first hit of the game in the fourth inning, but FSU worked through the inning to stay knotted.
FSU put the first run on the board in the fourth with a home run to left center to break up Conner's no-hit bid.
Ospreys responded with a run off of a fielding error to tie the game at one run a piece in the fifth.
A pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth gave FSU the lead back and put UNF down by two runs.
Skyler Stockie came in relief for Conner and got out of a bases-loaded jam with a fly-out to center field.
With runners on second and third, Channell put out a blooper RBI-single to make it a one-run game in the sixth.
Another RBI-single off a pinch hit from Kirsten Caravaca tied the game back up and gave new life to the Ospreys.
Seminoles responded yet again with another home run in the bottom of the sixth to take a one-run lead.
Jackson earned a base hit to get to first with one out in the seventh, but a strikeout and fly-out put UNF short in a hard-fought game against the sixth-ranked team in the nation.

NOTES

Kelly notched her third-career complete game and second-career shutout in a complete-game performance against FAMU.
Jackson's reached base twice on Wednesday to extend her on-base streak to 10 consecutive games.
Culp's hitting streak was extended to seven games against FAMU, but came to an end in the night cap against FSU.
It was also Culp's first game back in Tallahassee after playing for the Seminoles the past three seasons.
Caravaca earned her first RBI as a collegiate player in the sixth inning to tie the game.
First time Glover has started as the designated player in her Osprey career against the Rattlers.
Used same batting lineup in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Kelsey Vogel made the first appearance of her collegiate career as a pinch runner against FSU.

The Ospreys will stay on the road to play in a set of neutral site games against Cornell and Presbyterian at the Stetson Invitational on Feb. 25 starting at 9:30 a.m.
