JACKSONVILLE - No. 66 North Florida men's tennis quick start was quickly thwarted by Louisiana as the Ragin' Cajuns came back during singles play to clinch two three-set wins to secure a 4-3 victory on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Courts.
"This was obviously a disappointing loss. All credit to Louisiana - they played with a lot of heart," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "They took the match from us at the end. There were several disappointing things from us individually and in the loss. It isn't how you start - it is how you finish."
The Ospreys jumped out with the 1-0 lead after an ace from Zach Goldberg for a 6-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles position. The No. 3 duo of Julian Bradley and Jonathan Deautirell grabbed the 6-3 win to clinch the point.
In singles play, Goldberg and Deautriell did their jobs with victories in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, but it was a short lived lead for the Ospreys as Louisiana quickly battled back. After Deautriell picked up a win in the No. 4 position, Louisiana's Edgar Lopez knocked off Lasse Muscheites, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 position to put the Ragin' Cajuns on the board, 2-1. Goldberg then gave the Ospreys some breathing room with a 6-0, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles, but that was all North Florida could muster.
Junior Jack Findel-Hawkins battled closely with Jake Wynan, but the visitors walked away with the 7-5, 6-4 win in the top match. It was then left to Bradley and freshman Sahil Deshmukh who were playing in their third sets. Deshmukh won his first set, 6-3, but fell in the second, 3-6. Coleman Wahlborg then tied the match with a 7-5 victory in the final set. With the match in Bradley's hands, he could not battle back from being down 3-5 and dropped his final set 6-4 to Arthur Libaud as Louisiana clinched the match.
With the loss, UNF falls to 2-5 on the season. The Ospreys now head out of town for their next three matches with the first against UCF on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m.Â
