@ASunBSB All-Conference Awards: Laval, Dewees Earn Top Honors

Complete 2015 A-Sun All-Conference Teams
MACON, Ga. – Head Coach Smoke Laval was voted the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year while outfielder Donnie Dewees was named the league's Player of the Year. A total of four Ospreys received All-Conference honors this afternoon.

Laval led the Ospreys to D-1 era record 42 wins and guided North Florida to its first ever Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship. The former Southland and SEC Coach of the Year was recognized for the first time by the A-Sun. Already the program's Division I leader in wins (162), Laval eclipsed the 600-career win plateau earlier this season with a 16-7 win over his alma mater, Jacksonville on April 18.

Dewees was a unanimous pick for Atlantic Sun Player of the Year after a remarkable season at the plate. The redshirt sophomore led the league in nearly every offensive category including a .437 batting average to go along with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs. He became the first position player to garner A-Sun Player of the Week honors four times including on back-to-back occasions in early March. He ranks in the top 10 nationally in 11 different categories and goes into the A-Sun Tournament as the national leader in runs (81), runs per game (1.51), hits (101) and total bases (178). He also put together the country's longest hitting streak at 31 games.

Third baseman Trent Higginbothem and designated hitter Corbin Olmstead were both unanimous picks as First Team All-Conference members. Higginbothem collects a first team nod for the second-straight season after another productive year for the Ospreys. He started all but one game and was third in the league with a career-high, 61 RBIs and 49 runs scored. He ranks in the top 10 in the league in hits (72) and home runs (7). In two seasons as an Osprey he is a career .326 hitter and has driven in 111 runs.

Olmstead also earned all-league honors for the second-straight year at DH. He blasted 12 home runs which is the second most in the conference to Dewees' 17. In addition, Olmstead was a First Team All-Conference selection as a relief pitcher becoming the first player to earn First Team All-Conference honors at two positions in the same year. As a reliever, Olmstead allowed only one earned run in 31.2 innings pitched. He is tied for the league-lead with nine saves and leads the Osprey pitching staff with 46 strikeouts.

Freshman Matt Vaka was a member of the 13-player, Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team. The first-year right-hander developed into a weekend pitcher for the Ospreys and posted a 3-0 record with a 1.52 ERA in 41.1 innings pitched. The Ospreys were 10-2 in games in which Vaka started on the mound. Two of his last three times on the hill he has produced quality starts and he posted a team-best, 1.80 ERA in conference play this season.

The Ospreys are the top seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and will take on Kennesaw State on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Myers.
