Box Score (PDF)
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With still three regular season games yet to play, North Florida (39-13, 14-4 A-Sun) locked up its first Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship with a 8-2 victory over USC Upstate (15-34, 4-14 A-Sun) this afternoon.

The victory completed a three-game series sweep of the Spartans in which the Ospreys outscored USC Upstate, 28-10. The victory is the 11th straight for North Florida which ties the D-1 era record set earlier this season.

Redshirt senior Ryan Roberson broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth with a lead-off home run, his sixth of the season. The Spartans notched the game up at two in the inning prior on an RBI single by Erik Samples. Roberson, who earlier in the game registered his 200th hit as an Osprey, blasted a 2-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall. He was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the contest.

The Ospreys were able to cushion the lead with a five-run ninth inning, the second rally of five runs of the series. After Dewees walked with the bases loaded to score the first run, Trent Higginbothem plated two more on an RBI single to left field, his seventh and eighth RBIs of the series. An RBI ground out by Alex Bacon and a run-scoring single by Keith Skinner capped the North Florida scoring.

Higginbothem finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. In the three-game series he was 5-for-18 (.357) with two runs and eight RBIs.

Sophomore Tyler DuPont was credited with his sixth win of the year after coming on in relief in the bottom of the first inning. DuPont surrendered five hits in 5.1 innings pitched. He allowed only one run and struck out three to improve to 6-1 on the season.

After Upstate jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first, the Ospreys used a two-out, two-run rally in the fourth to recapture the lead. Consecutive triples by Nick Karmeris and Garrick Ferguson tied the game up at one. Patrick Ervin then plated Ferguson with a single down the right field line to make the score 2-1, his 21st RBI of the season. Karmeris and Ferguson each had two hits in the contest and Ferguson scored two of the Ospreys eight runs.

Relievers Dan VanSickle and Corbin Olmstead combined to pitch the final three innings for the Ospreys keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard. Olmstead converted the four-out save, his eighth of the season which is the second most in the Atlantic Sun.

Outfielder Donnie Dewees was one of five Ospreys to put forth multiple-hit efforts after going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He extended his 28-game hit streak with a single in the third inning. With 13 hits in today's game, North Florida racked up 39 total hits in the three-game series and are now 30-5 this season when recording 10 or more hits.

The Ospreys will return home for the first time since April 19 on Tuesday when they host in-state foe, UCF at Harmon Stadium. North Florida took the first matchup against the Knights back on April 21 in Orlando, 9-3. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
