MACON, Ga. – After a historic run to the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship game the North Florida men's soccer team was picked to finish third in the annual preseason men's soccer coaches poll. Sophomore Jay Bolt and junior Alex Morrell were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Picked behind Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast who tied for the most votes, the Ospreys garner their highest preseason ranking since entering the Atlantic Sun in 2005. North Florida finished last year with a record of 8-7-3 and entered the conference tournament as the number five seed. After upsetting Mercer in the first round, North Florida knocked off top-seeded FGCU in the semifinals, 2-1 before ultimately falling to ETSU, 3-1 in the championship game.
"This is a significant step for our program and we are honored to be among the top three teams in the poll," said fourth-year Head Coach Derek Marinatos. "It shows that people took notice in what we accomplished last season but our goal right now is to continue preparations to achieve our ultimate goal of winning a conference championship."
Bolt put forth a tremendous first season for the Ospreys in 2013, earning All-Freshman Team honors. He started 15 of the 16 games in which he appeared and scored the game-winning goal in his first collegiate game. Morrell was a Second Team All-Conference selection last season and was the team's top distributor. He was third in the conference with five assists and added two goals from his attacking position.
In a late surge, North Florida defender Diogo Quirino egdged FGCU's Aaron Guillen in the facebook fan poll for Defensive Player of the Year. Beginning early yesterday, fans had the opportunity to go to the Atlantic Sun's Facebook page and vote for Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year. Voting ended at noon ET with 428 votes for Quirino.
The Ospreys will get their first taste of competition on Monday when they travel to FIU for an exhibition match at 7:00 p.m.
