FRINTON, Great Britain – University of North Florida men's tennis' Jack Findel-Hawkins had an impressive showing at the Great Britain F14 Futures Tournament held at Frinton LTC. Findel-Hawkins advanced to the doubles final and reached the main draw in the singles competition.
Â
"It's great to see Jack having some success this summer," said UNF head coach Mark Finnegan. "These future tournaments are a mix of the elite college players and professional players. Jack had a great freshman year last season and learned a lot. I know he is planning to play in a few more events and hopefully that will create some great momentum heading into our fall season."
Â
In the doubles competition, Findel-Hawkins teamed with Toby Mitchell in order to make the championship match on Friday. The duo captured their first round match after Alexander Jhun and Stefan Sterland-Markovic retired. Findel-Hawkins and Mitchell were up 6-1, 4-1. In the quarterfinals, the pair powered past Adam Skalsky and Mark Whitehouse 6-3, 6-2. Findel-Hawkins and Mitchell used a three-set 7-6 (7), 3-6, 10-4 semifinal victory over Myles Orton and Neil Pauffley to propel them into the finals. Findel-Hawkins and Mitchell fell just short in the finals, dropping the first set 6-4 to George Coupland and David Rice before retiring from the match.
Â
In singles play, Findel-Hawkins went 3-0 in the qualifying draw in order to move on to the main draw. He rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Marshall Tutu in Round 1. Findel-Hawkins took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matthew Kirby in the second round. He finished the qualifying draw with another three-set victory in Round 3. Singles competition came to an end for Findel-Hawkins in the first round as Keelan Oakley took a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-5 win.
Â
Findel-Hawkins had an outstanding freshman season at UNF last season. He was named the Atlantic Sun's Freshman of the Year and earned First-Team All-Conference and All-Freshman Team honors. He was nationally ranked in doubles with Norbert Nemcsek for much of the season, ending the year ranked No. 48. Findel-Hawkins and Nemcsek earned a bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship where the pair upset No. 1 Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento of Southern California 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.
