TROY, Ala. – University of North Florida softball opened the 2014 season and the Troy Subway Invitational with a 2-1 eight-inning victory over Northwestern State, but ended the day with a 10-1 five-inning loss to No. 6 Alabama on Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.

In UNF's first game of the day, the Ospreys got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Mariah Reynolds sent an RBI double to left center in order to drive in Danica Mandarano from second.

The Ospreys maintained its lead until the Lady Demons tied it at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with a Brittany Virgoe one-out solo home run.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Marissa Thomas' sacrifice bunt allowed Reynolds to advance to third. A wild pitch brought home Reynolds for the game-winning run.

Cortney Radke pitched all 8.0 innings in the win. Radke struck out 11 batters and only gave up one hit.
Â
Skylar Cagle pitched 3.1 innings in relief and had the loss. Cagle fanned four batters and allowed two hits and one unearned run. Kaylee Guidry pitched the first 4.0 innings for the Lady Demons, allowing five hits and striking out three.

Thomas was 3-for-3 from the plate, while Mandarano was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

UNF's final game of the day did not begin until after 10 p.m., EST. Alabama got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Danae Hays began the inning with a lead-off home run to center field. Jordan Patterson scored from third on a Ryan Iamurri two-out double to put Alabama up 2-0. Iamurri then had the Crimson Tide's third run, scoring on an Osprey error.

UNF answered in the bottom half of the second inning. Thomas sent a lead-off homer over the left field wall to make it 3-1.

Alabama continued to build on its lead with a three-run third inning. Kallie Case's two-out double to left center brought in two runs. Case then put the Crimson Tide up 6-1 when she got home on a Haylie McCleney hit up the middle.

The Crimson Tide added one more run in the fourth and then three in the fifth. In the fourth, Kalia Hunt scored on an Osprey miscue. In the fifth, one-out, bases load hit through the right side from Jaclyn Spencer brought in two runs, while a Jaclyn Traina sac fly drove in Iamurri.

Kaylie Wallace received the loss after allowing five earned runs off five hits in 2.2 innings of work. She also struck out two.

Traina had the win after allowing one run off one hit and striking out five in 4.0 innings.

Thomas and Manadarano each registered one hit against Alabama.

Case and McCleney were both 2-for-3 from the plate and had two and one RBI, respectively.
UNF plays two more games during the second day of the Troy Subway Invitational. The Ospreys face Northwestern State at Noon EST/11 a.m. CST, and Middle Tennessee at 2:30 p.m. EST/1:30 p.m. CST. Both games will take place at the Troy Sportsplex.
