JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Tennis Recruiting Network released its 2013 NCAA signing class rankings and the University of North Florida men's tennis team's 2013-14 recruiting class was ranked No. 15 nationally.
The rankings mark the first time in North Florida's men's tennis history to have a signing class ranked according to The Recruiting Network. The Ospreys rank third in the poll among mid-major universities. In addition, North Florida is the only Atlantic Sun school to be ranked.
North Florida joined perennial collegiate tennis powers Virginia, Florida, Florida State, Stanford and USC in the top 15. For a complete list of The Tennis Recruiting Network's rankings, click here for the overall and click here for the Mid-Major .
The Tennis Recruiting Network enlisted the aid of junior tennis experts to determine the top classes. Reporters, national and international tournament directors, referees, ranking chairmen, and writers from across the country donated their time and talents to vote on these top classes.
Each of panelists submitted his/her take on the Top 25 recruiting classes. Schools received 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 points for each second-place vote, on down to 1 point for each 25th-place vote.
North Florida makes its first-ever appearance in the recruiting class rankings. The Ospreys have never before garnered a single vote, but that all changed this year, as the five-man class of Zachary Goldberg, Caio Gomes, Fabian Pronnet, Yannick Zuern and Jack Findel-Hawkins earned 178 points – which was good enough for the No. 15 spot in the list.
The five signees join the team after the Ospreys graduated five players from this year's 15-8 squad that went undefeated in Atlantic Sun Conference play to take home its first-ever outright regular season conference championship.
Goldberg, who won the Florida Class 3A individual title this season, is rated as a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. The site also listed the senior as a top-100 prospect in their national rankings earlier this year. Goldberg signed with UNF during the fall signing period.
Gomes, a native of Cuiaba, Brazil, comes to the Ospreys by way of a standout pair of seasons at Laredo Community College in St. Laredo, Texas. Laredo CC has captured seven of the last eight Division I Junior College Men's Tennis Championships, having won six straight from 2005-2010 before capturing the title again in 2012. Gomes has played in the No. 1 singles spot for Laredo for much of the 2013 season.
Pronnet hails from Bad Endorf, Germany and will join UNF after taking a year off following his high school graduation. In 2011, Pronnet notched wins over multiple opponents with ATP rankings. He was also a 10-time regional champion in Germany in his age group.
Zuern, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, is ranked in the U18 top 10 in his home country and, at one point in his career, was ranked #1515 by the ATP in singles play. Since the beginning of 2013, Zuern has knocked off a trio of ATP-ranked opponents, including a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 867 Philip Davydenko.
Jack Findel-Hawkins rounds out the 2013 signing class, hailing from Exmouth, Great Britain. Findel-Hawkins is very highly-regarded and currently sits at No. 1298 in the ATP singles rankings. This past year, he has spent much of his time holding the No. 1 ranking among Great Britain's U18 players. Findel-Hawkins has numerous wins over ATP-ranked players this year, including a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over No. 674 Richard Gabb, a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 660 Bastian Trinker and a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Neil Pauffley, No. 471 in the ATP rankings.
