URBANA, Ill. -- Senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek will make their debut as a doubles pair at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship on Thursday, marking the first-ever appearance by UNF athletes in the competition.
The duo, which tallied a 16-6 record together in 2012-13 while playing against many of the top pairs in the country, will face Chip Cox and Tsvetan Mihov of South Carolina in tomorrow's first round, at a time that will be determined late this evening.
Buerchner and Nemcsek have already put together a season that ranks as the most decorated doubles season in UNF history. In the fall, with little herald, the duo advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 ITA All-American Tennis Championships and earned both an at-large invite and a first-round victory at the USTA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
En route to those accomplishments, the pair tallied a 2-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents. They scored a 9-8 victory in the fall over Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler of Duke, the second-seeded pair in the NCAA Championships, as well as an 8-7 victory over Juan Spir and Vikram Hundal, who were ranked third in the country at the time.
The duo also held their own against Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger of Virginia, who are seeded fourth in the NCAA Championships, playing the pair to a 7-7 tie before the match was left unfinished. Nathan Pasha and Garrett Brasseaux of Georgia, who the pair defeated 8-3 in the fall, are also in the doubles field.
