JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida head basketball coach Matthew Driscoll announced the signing of Louisiana-Monroe transfer Trent Mackey to a national grant-in-aid to play for the Ospreys.
A 6-4 guard from Tampa, Fla., Mackey will sit out the 2013-14 season to fulfill NCAA transfer requirements and be eligible to play for the Ospreys in 2014-15 as a junior.
“Trent has done a tremendous job from a character and academic standpoint in his career,” said Driscoll. “In addition, he has already proven himself as an outstanding collegiate three-pointer shooter owning a career percentage of over 43 percent. Being the son of a coach, he brings an extra toughness and edge that you want all your athletes to possess. Trent will use this upcoming transfer year to build up his strength and size while also continuing to refine his basketball skill set in preparation for his final two years of competition.”
Mackey averaged 11.0 points per game last season for the ULM, while also making 70 three-pointers and connecting at a 44 percent clip from long distance. He finished the year ranked 12th in the nation in three-point percentage and ranked 57th in treys made. In addition, Mackey led the Warhawks with a free throw percentage of 80 percent.
As a freshman at ULM, Mackey shot 43.3 percent from long distance hitting 42 treys and averaging 5.8 points a game. He was a three-year prep standout at Newsome High School, where he averaged 20.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game as a senior. Mackey is the second leading all-time scorer in NHS history finishing his career with 1,130 points and owns the school record for most three-pointers in a season and a career.
