INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team has drawn the sixth-seeded Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday evening.
"It is a great accomplishment for us to get a bid into the NCAA Tournament," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "I am very proud of the heart and determination these girls displayed in their quest to make it back to the tournament."
The Ospreys qualified for the tournament by way of their third Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in four years last weekend, when they upset top-seeded East Tennessee State, 4-2, to capture the conference's automatic bid.
Miami, who is hosting its ninth-consecutive NCAA Regional at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, won its first-ever ACC Championship this past weekend to sew up the sixth-overall seed in the tournament. The Hurricanes have racked up a 20-5 record in 2013 with a roster that includes no seniors and four players in their first season of collegiate tennis.
UNF will take on the Hurricanes on Friday, May 10 at 2 p.m., while South Carolina (13-11) and Purdue (17-5), the other two teams at the Coral Gables regional, will open the day with an 11 a.m. match. The winners of the two matches will meet in the regional final on Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m.
This is the second consecutive year that the Ospreys have drawn Miami in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as they fell 4-0 in Coral Gables last season. Earlier this regular season, UNF fell at Miami by a 7-0 margin, though the Ospreys won 17 of their last 20 matches following that defeat.
"While we were initially frustrated to be drawn against the same opponent for the second straight year, we're now excited to make the trip and redeem ourselves against Miami," Cohen said. "Our loss earlier this year was one of our worst matches of the year and we consider ourselves fortunate to have another opportunity with some new matchups in singles and doubles."
UNF Head Coach Audra Cohen spent her stellar collegiate tennis career at Miami, where she earned the school's first-ever NCAA women's singles championship in 2007.
"On a personal level, going to Miami is always special for me," Cohen said. "Coach Yaroshuk-Tews was my coach in college and she is a major reason for much of my personal success as a player and coach. I have a great deal of respect for her program and I'm looking forward to competing in Coral Gables again."
