MACON, Ga. -- Six members of the University of North Florida women's tennis team garnered Atlantic Sun Conference postseason awards for the 2013 season, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Senior Lorena Aviles, the only unanimous selection to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, was also named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, the Ospreys' second such honor in two years. Aviles was joined on the All-A-Sun First Team by junior Simona Weymar, who was also UNF's only representative on the All-Academic Atlantic Sun Team.
Senior Melanie Aguirre and freshman Mariella Calderon were both named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team for singles, while sophomores Marina Cunningham and Taylor Hollander both garnered spots on the second team in doubles play. Calderon was also a unanimous choice for the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.
Aviles, who was also named to the All-A-Sun First Team as a junior, garnered the A-Sun Player of the Year award by way of a 15-3 season, all at the No. 1 singles position, including a 7-1 mark in conference matches. The senior also paired with Aguirre at the No. 1 doubles spot, racking up an 11-4 record in 2013. Aviles is UNF's second player in as many years to earn the conference's top award, as Aline Berkenbrock was named Player of the Year in 2012.
“It's such a great accomplishment for Lorena to earn Player of the Year to polish off her successful career as an Osprey,” Head Coach Audra Cohen said. “Our conference has improved each year and she has continuously stepped up to be one of the most reliable players in program history. Off the court, she is a great girl and a leader expects a lot from herself and her teammates and I couldn't be more proud of her.”
Weymar, a second team All-A-Sun selection in her first two years as an Osprey, was named to the first team this season after racking up a 13-3 singles record, playing almost exclusively at the No. 2 spot. Weymar also teamed up with sophomore Rebeca Pereira at the No. 2 doubles position to cruise to a flawless 9-0 record on the year. In her junior year, Weymar carries a 3.63 GPA while majoring in Business Management.
“Simona has grown into a top-of-the-lineup player with craft and determination,” Cohen said. “She is a perfect example of the strength and refusal-to-lose that this program is built on. She went from a player at the bottom of the lineup to dominating the No. 2 spot. She is certainly the most improved player in program history and maybe even in conference history. Furthermore, she is an outstanding student and has worked hard this year to earn the All-A-Sun academic honor.”
Aguirre earned her first career singles postseason honor with a 13-5 record on the year, playing at four positions for the Ospreys. She earned a 7-1 record in conference play, with all seven wins coming at the No. 5 spot.
“I'm very proud of Melanie as she finished up her career on a high note,” Cohen said. “She has been a great Osprey for four years and has continuously improved on and off the court.”
Calderon, UNF's other selection the A-Sun second team, proved a crucial addition to the Ospreys, rolling to an undefeated 6-0 record in conference matches. She was one of five unanimous selections to the All-Freshman team. Cunningham and Hollander, named to the doubles portion of the A-Sun second team, rolled to a flawless 6-0 record in 2013, including a 5-0 mark in conference play.
“Mariella was a fearless competitor as a freshman this year,” Cohen said. “She handles pressure like a senior and certainly deserves the accolade. Taylor and Marina have evolved into the heart of our doubles lineup this season. They work together and bring an energy to every match that is contagious and helps our team start every match on our terms.”
The Ospreys are set to defend their Atlantic Sun Tournament title this weekend, as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. as the 2-seed. UNF will kick off its tournament action in Saturday's semifinals, where it will face the winner of No. 3 USC Upstate and No. 6 Kennesaw State in a match scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
