North Florida Rebounds with 5-2 Victory Over Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After dropping a game on Tuesday night, the University of North Florida baseball team posted a 5-2 victory over Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla. on Wednesday afternoon in the second game of a five-game road trip. Tied 2-2, the Ospreys scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and relied on solid defense to post the three-run victory.
As a team, the Ospreys collected 13 hits on the day, including four doubles. Corey Bass and Paul Karmeris each had three hits apiece with Bass finishing the day with two doubles. Joe Wielbruda added two hits, including a double, while Spencer Herrmann added a double. Five different Ospreys scored a run in the game, while Bass led the team with three runs batted in.
On the mound, the Ospreys used three pitchers to limit the Rattlers to just a pair of runs. Starting pitcher Nick Allbritton earned his first victory of the season, working 5.0 innings on the day. The senior allowed a pair of runs, scattering five hits in his outing. Allbritton walked one and finished the game with a team-best three strikeouts. Evan Incinelli worked the next 3.0 innings, scattering five hits without allowing a run or a walk. Herrmann, who started the game at first base, came in to pitch the final inning. The Jacksonville native did not allow a run, allowing just one hit for his first collegiate save.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating a run in the top of the third inning. Herrmann led off the inning with a double to left center field. With one out, Bass doubled to right center field to score Herrmann and give UNF a 1-0 advantage.
The Ospreys added a run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Bass singled to right center field and moved to second on a bunt single by Wielbruda. North Florida attempted a double steal, but the lead runner was called out. With a runner on second and two outs, Drew Weeks pushed the lead to 2-0 with a RBI single to left field.
The Rattlers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Florida A&M used a walk and a single to put a pair of runners on base. FAMU advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. The Ospreys struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch scored the lead runner. With a runner on third and two outs, Florida A&M used a RBI single up the middle to score a run and knot the game at 2-2.
North Florida regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. P. Karmeris led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. With one out, Kyle Brooks singled to give UNF a pair of base runners. Bass drove home both base runners with a two-RBI double down the right field line. Wielbruda followed with an RBI double down the left field line to score Bass from second, giving North Florida a 5-2 lead.
The Osprey defense held strong in the final three innings, holding the Rattlers scoreless and preserving the three-run victory.
North Florida continues its five-game road trip with a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against Lipscomb. The Ospreys and Bisons open the conference season with a game on Friday night at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. (CT) / 7:00 p.m. (ET).
