
Softball Gets A Split On Opening Day, Beats Bethune-Cookman, Falls to No. 25/24 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball split its two games on opening day at the Panhandle Invitational, getting a 3-1 win over Bethune-Cookman to start and then finishing with a 3-1 loss to tournament host No. 25/24 Florida State.
All three of UNF's runs against Bethune-Cookman came in the first two innings. Kelly Wilson scored on a Bethune-Cookman miscue in the first and UNF went up 1-0. Then in the second, Ashley Holton sent a two-out single to left field, driving in Stephanie McAdam and Abby Tewey and the Ospreys held a 3-0 advantage.
UNF kept the shutout going until the top of the seventh when the Lady Wildcats got on the scoreboard. Michelle Banuelos-Smith took advantage of an Osprey throwing error to score Bethune-Cookman's only run.
Kaylie Wallace pitched all 7.0 innings en route to collecting the win. Wallace struck out a career-high 11 batters and allowed just six hits.
Shanel Tolbert was credited with the loss. In 5.0 innings, she struck out three and gave up seven hits and two earned runs.
Wilson went 2-for-4 with one run from the plate, while Lauren Pollack was 2-for-3.
Aurelia Gamch led the Lady Wildcats with a 3-for-3 showing from the plate.
In the day's second game, Florida State got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Kelly Hensley scored off a Victoria East sacrifice fly.
The Seminoles' lead did not last for long as UNF responded in the top of the third. Wilson sent a two-out single down the left field line that brought home Taylor and tied the game at 1-1.
UNF and Florida State remained tied until Maddie O'Brien hit a two-out, two-run single to right field in the bottom of the fifth.
Monica Perry received the win after pitching the final 2.1 innings and recording four strikeouts for the Seminoles. Lacey Waldrop went the first 4.2 innings and fanned nine batters and allowed two hits.
Kayla Goff threw all 6.0 innings in the loss. Goff struck out two and gave up six hits and three runs.
Both Megan Mihalik and Wilson were 1-for- 3 from the plate for the Ospreys.
Florida State had six different players with each one hit.
UNF concludes the Panhandle Invitational with two games on Sunday. The Ospreys face Florida A&M at 9 a.m., and then Bethune-Cookman at approximately 11 a.m.
