FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team rolled to a flawless victory on Sunday morning, downing Nova Southeastern, 9-0, in dominating fashion.
"We had a very solid day today," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "I'm very happy with how well the girls bounced back after Saturday's loss."
The Ospreys got the match started the way they'd hoped, as they swept the doubles matches, all of which were worth one point. Seniors Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre claimed an 8-2 decision over Alexandra Johansson and Carlee Rizzolo at #1, while Sophomores Taylor Hollander and Rebeca Pereira controlled an 8-1 victory over Austin Lavallii and Charlotte Cote at #2 from beginning to end.
Freshman Mariella Calderon and junior Simona Weymar finished off the doubles action by taking home an 8-4 victory at #3 over Linda Kornienko and Bianca Roberts.
UNF continued it's dominance in singles, taking all six matches in straight sets. Aviles downed Johansson at #1, 6-2, 6-2, while Weymar earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rizzolo at #2. At #3, Cunningham rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Hollander won her first 6-0 set en route to a 6-0, 6-4 win at #4.
Pereira's 7-5, 6-3 victory at #5 and Aguirre's 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 finished off the dominant afternoon for the Ospreys.
"I told the girls to take what they learned yesterday and make today the first day of the rest of the season," Cohen said. "They did just that and are ready to go home for a solid run of tough home matches."
The Ospreys will return home after two weeks off, when they host Houston on February 15 at 11 a.m. That match will kick off nine-match homestand that will not force UNF out of Jacksonville until March 22.
