Swimming/Diving Concludes Day 1 at CCSA Championships

Day 1 Results
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team posted a solid effort in the first day of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships at the Gabrielson Natatorium in Athens, Ga. on the campus of the University of Georgia.
North Florida finished the first day of competition in third place, two points ahead of Georgia Southern. Florida Gulf Coast, the winner of the past four CCSA Championships, leads after one day of competition with 245 points. Liberty is in second place with 182.5 points. UNF has 143 points, followed by GSU with 141. Gardner-Webb rounds out the top five with 108 points. The final teams include College of Charleston (93.5), Davidson (80), Campbell (78), Radford (37), UNC Asheville (35), Howard (32), VMI (15) and North Carolina A&T (10).
The Ospreys began the day with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Janie Kennedy, Maria Bernard and Rebeca Bernard combined for a season-best time of 1:37.41 – just 1.39 seconds off the North Florida school record in the event. In addition, Amy Taylor, Kennedy, Olivia Langford and Krissy Morgan clocked a time of 1:39.64 – the second fastest time of the season for UNF.
In the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle, Taylor notched a career-best time of 5:01.11 to advance to the finals in the event, scheduled for Friday. Langford also competed in the distance event for the Ospreys, posting a season-best time of 5:06.70, while M. Bernard posted a career mark of 5:10.46 in the event. Kennedy (5:14.72), Caitlyn Gutierrez (5:16.76) and Kristina Alexiou (5:18.93) each posted season-best marks in the 500 free.
Sara Evans and Natalie McCallum finished back-to-back in the prelims of the 200 individual medley, followed closely by Bridget Woods to all advance to the finals. Evans posted a season-best mark of 2:05.12 to lead the Osprey charge. McCallum was just behind Evans with a time of 2:05.41, while Woods finished in the top eight with a 2:06.53. Team captain Katie England posted a season-best time of 2:08.76 to finish as an alternate for the finals. In addition, Lissa Janowicz clocked a season-best time of 2:11.38 in the event.
The 50 freestyle prelims saw R. Bernard finish less than one second off the school record with a time of 24.50. She was joined in the event by Hannah Brown who clocked a season-best time of 27.69.
In the 1-meter diving preliminaries, Fernanda Robles and Julia Moomaw were the top finishers. Robles finished fourth in the prelims with a score of 245.50, while Moomaw posted a score of 244.45 to claim fifth. Monica Rice finished in the top 8 with a score of 236.85 to finish in the top half of the finals. Morgan Whittle (214.10) and Amanda Habig (203.00) closed out the scoring for the Ospreys in the diving preliminaries.
In the afternoon session, Taylor notched a sixth place finish in the finals of the 500 freestyle. The true freshman posted a time of 5:01.64 to finish just off the podium in her first CCSA Championships.
Evans finished just off the podium with a fourth place finish in the finals of the 200 IM. The senior posted a time of 2:04.20, just shy of her school-record time of 2:03.78 in the event that she set last year at the CCSA Championships. Woods bested her prelims time with a mark of 2:05.03 in the finals to earn a fifth place finish. McCallum rounded out the times for the Ospreys with a finals time of 2:06.48.
