SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team, along with senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek, was cited in the ITA College Tennis Rankings, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Friday.
As a team, the Ospreys checked in at 64th in Friday's preseason rankings, up from 66th the 2012 season's final release. UNF was the highest-ranked member of the Atlantic Sun Conference in the 75-team rankings, sitting seven spots higher than East Tennessee State, the defending A-Sun Champion, who is tied for 71st with Oregon.
"These rankings are a reflection of the attitude of our senior class," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "These guys have embraced a mentality of being able to compete with and beat the best programs in the country."
Buerchner and Nemcsek also garnered considerable acclaim as a doubles pairing, as they were ranked 20th overall in the preseason Men's National Doubles Rankings.
The duo is coming off a fall that saw them advance to the semifinals of the 2012 ITA All-American Tennis Championships and earn a first-round victory at the USTA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. En route to those accomplishments, Buerchner and Nemcsek earned a 9-8 victory over Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler of Duke, who were the top-ranked pairing in Friday's national rankings.
Buerchner also earned honors as a singles player, checking in at 72nd on the 125-player Men's National Singles Rankings. The senior was not ranked in the final release of 2012.
"I don't think anyone is satisfied," Schaechterle said. "They're very hungry to get on the road and make some more noise at the national level."
UNF kicks off its 2013 campaign when it travels to Charlottesville, Va. on Jan. 25 to face off against the University of Virginia, who was ranked first overall in Friday's national rankings.
