Swimming/Diving Completes First Meet of Season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team concluded the inaugural meet of the 2012-13 season on Sunday afternoon at the All-Florida Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Pool in Gainesville, Fla.
Meet-host Florida won the three-day invitational, followed by Florida State. Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association foe Florida Gulf Coast took third, followed by Miami, Florida Atlantic, North Florida, Nova Southeastern and Rollins College. In men's competition, Florida downed Florida State. Florida Atlantic placed third, followed by Nova Southeastern, Rollins and Miami.
In the final day of competition, the finals began with the 1,650-yard freestyle. The Ospreys' Amy Taylor clocked a 17:44.01 to finish as the top UNF swimmer. Olivia Langford finished second among North Florida swimmers with an 18:07.01, followed by Janie Kennedy (18:45.04) and Allison Troia (19:38.89).
The finals of the 200 backstroke saw Ellice Mae Sanchez finish as the Ospreys' top swimmer with a time of 2:09.56. Kristiana Alexiou (2:13.03) and Amy Taylor (2:13.90) finished back-to-back to round out the event for UNF.
Bridget Woods (55.82), Maria Bernard (55.83) and Langford (55.88) finished 1-2-3 among North Florida swimmers in the preliminaries of the 100 freestyle.
Woods was the top finisher of the day for North Florida in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore posted a time of 2:24.67, while teammate Sara Evans registered a time of 2:27.87 in the event.
Evans advanced to the finals of the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.70. The senior trimmed two seconds off of her pace for a 2:09.59 in the finals.
The Ospreys had two relay teams in the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Rebeca Bernard, M. Bernard, Langford and Natalie McCallum posted a time of 3:36.47 to edge Sanchez, Katie England, Kennedy and Woods (3:39.59).
Over the weekend, Fernanda Robles was the Ospreys' top finisher in the 1-meter diving with 205.40 points. Monica Rice (199.00) and Julia Moomaw (188.55) finished back-to-back in the event, followed by Amanda Habig (174.65).
Robles and Moomaw finished back-to-back in the 3-meter board with 226.20 and 220.85 points, respectively. Rice notched 196.10 points, followed by Habig's 186.95 points.
North Florida returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 20 as the Ospreys head to Buies Creek, N.C. to square off against Campbell and North Carolina A&T in a tri meet. The meet is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
