GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Senior Moritz Buerchner advanced to the finals of the Bedford Cup for the second consecutive year as the University of North Florida men's tennis team wrapped up the third day of play on the campus of the University of Florida.
Buerchner, seeded seventh in the tournament, delivered a hard-fought victory in his first singles match of the day, knocking off fourth-seeded Florent Diep of Florida in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"Moritz's quarterfinals win was probably the most complete match I've ever seen him play," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "He came back and played great against a very high-quality opponent."
The senior then defeated Federico Sabogal of USF in the semifinals in another three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to tomorrow morning's final. Buerchner will face off against Gordon Watson of Florida in a match beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday morning.
UNF's only remaining doubles team, consisting of Buerchner and senior Julien Belair, fell in their semifinal match to Diep and Mike Alford of Florida, the third-seeded doubles pairing. For his efforts in the tournament, Belair was the recipient of the Doug Barr Sportsmanship Award.
"I think, as a whole, this tournament was a good one for us," Schaechterle said. "It showed us what we had to work on and how we can improve in the next couple weeks. We're also all very proud of Julien for earning the Doug Barr award."
Tomorrow's singles final will begin at 9 a.m., while the remaining Ospreys will next take the courts in two weeks, when they head to Fort Myers, Fla. to take part in the FGCU Invite, Sept. 28-30.
