Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day Two at Bedford Cup

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team advanced two singles players and a doubles team to at least the third round during the second day of the Bedford Cup, held on the campus of the University of Florida on Saturday.
"I was extremely proud of our effort today," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "We did a great job of entering each match with a plan and giving ourselves a chance to win."
Senior Moritz Buerchner, seeded seventh in the tournament, led the way for the Ospreys, advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles draw. After downing Omar Aly of Miami, 6-2, 6-1, Buerchner bounced back from a difficult opening set to beat Diego Soto of Miami in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Julien Belair also moved out of the second round, advancing past Joao Gauer of Florida State, 6-2, 6-4, before dropping a hard-fought match to Ravi Patel of USF in the Round of 16, 7-6, 7-5.
Buerchner and Belair also had a stellar day on the doubles court. The pair battled for a hard-fought victory over a MIami pairing, 9-8 (8-5), before downing the Florida State pairing seeded second in the tournament, 8-6, to advance to the tournament semifinals. Their semifinal match will begin tomorrow at 2 p.m.
"Moritz and Julien played great today," Schaechterle said. "They absolutely looked like a #1 team in both their matches today."
In his second-round match, sophomore Timo Kranz dropped a tough three-set bout to Dean Tsamas of Florida Gulf Coast, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7. Senior Pedro Davisson also last a marathon three-setter, 6-4, 6-7, 2-6, to J. Kelly Houston of Florida State, the sixth-seeded player in the tournament.
"We need to continue working on showing poise under pressure and trusting our preparation when we have chances to finish off big wins," Schaechterle said. "We can definitely build on today."
Tomorrow's singles matches will begin at 9 a.m., while doubles matches will start at 2 p.m.
