GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team fell in their 2012 season opener, dropping a 2-0 decision to Furman on Friday night.
On a hot and humid evening in Greenville, the Ospreys held the Paladins scoreless in the first half, but struggled at times to match Furman's energy at the onset of the match.
"This game was important for us because it showed how important it is for us to start the game with a high amount of energy," Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. "Against a team as good as Furman, it's always tough to chase the game."
After halftime, the game was much more balanced, as Furman only outshot the Ospreys 7-5 in the second period. UNF also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks after the intermission.
Stephanie DeVita opened the scoring for Furman in the 61st minute when she fired home an unassisted goal from just outside the penalty area. Dee Makris finished the scoring in the 82nd minute when she poked in a rebound from Hannah Stanifer's free kick to give the Paladins their final 2-0 advantage.
Senior Michele Larrinaga and sophomore Alexi Zaremba each had two shots to lead the Ospreys on the evening, while sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Beninati made four saves for UNF.
DeVita and Caitlin Shelton led the way for Furman, notching three shots each. Goalkeeper Rose Hull only needed to make one save to earn the shutout.
UNF fell to 0-1 and Furman moved to 1-0 as both teams kicked off their 2012 season.
"I was very proud of our team's effort and fight in the second half; I think we battled very hard after halftime," Hamilton said. "We learned a lot about things we need to work on and hopefully we can come out and have a great game against Clemson on Sunday."
The Ospreys travel down the road to face Clemson on Sunday afternoon, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. A link to live stats will be provided on UNFOspreys.com.
