JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team has added three players to its roster for the 2012-13 season, as announced by Head Coach Adam Schaechterle on Tuesday.
Fernando Costa, Bernardo Craveiro and Mark Hamill join the Ospreys beginning in the fall of 2012.
“I'm excited about all three of these student-athletes,” Schaechterle said. “The success of our program is helping us reach the best recruits from all over the world. We are excited to develop these players and see what they can do this fall.”
Costa will have two years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Samford. He was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in 2011 and the All-Southern Conference Second Team in 2012. As a sophomore, Costa racked up a 14-6 record in dual matches, including a win at No. 4 singles against a top-50 Alabama squad. Prior to attending Samford, Costa garnered a top-ten ranking in his home country of Brazil.
“Fernando has already proven his ability to win consistently against D1 competition and we look forward to him impacting our singles and doubles lineups immediately,” said Schaechterle.
Craveiro hails from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the same hometown as current UNF teammate Pedro Davisson.
“Bernardo is a bright, talented student-athlete and we see him as a great fit for our program,” Schaechterle said. “He puts a lot of balls in play and will challenge for playing time as a freshman.”
Hamill arrives at UNF ranked in the top-10 for his age group in his home country of Canada. Schaecheterle bills him as an aggressive baseliner who likes to move forward and finish points at the net.
“Mark is a very hard worker who has built a fine junior career while training in a place not typically known for tennis,” said Schaechterle. “We expect him to develop very quickly once he joins our program.”
UNF returns much of the squad that finished the 2012 season with a No. 66 national ranking. The Ospreys were ranked 11 times, including in the final eight polls of the 2012 season. UNF achieved its highest ranking in its Division I years on Mar. 20, coming in at No. 50 after posting back-to-back 4-3 wins over nationally-ranked South Alabama and UNC Wilmington in consecutive days.
