JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team announced its 2012 schedule featuring 32 matches including 13 home contests at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys, under the guidance of first year head coach Steve Loeswick, will participate in tournament play in each of the first four weekends of the season highlighted by the North Florida Invitational on Sept. 7-8. UNF returns all 13 players including six seniors from last year's squad that boasted a 14-17 record and participated in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
“We wanted to put together a schedule that was challenging but also allowed this veteran team to be successful,” said Loeswick, who led the Ospreys to the A-Sun Sand Volleyball title during the spring. “We are playing in some competitive tournaments during the pre-conference and have the chance to mature and develop as a team. We want to grow and get better every match and look to be playing our best volleyball as we get into conference play.”
North Florida opens the season Aug. 24-25 at the Tiger Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. The event field includes Missouri, Michigan and Nicholls State. Following the trip to Mizzou, UNF will participate in the Courtyard Charleston North Classic (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) hosted by the College of Charleston and featuring matches against CofC, Memphis and the Serbian National Team.
The Ospreys make their home debut Sept. 7-8 in the North Florida Invitational. UNF opens the event against Florida A&M at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7. The other participating teams in the tournament at UNF Arena include Davidson and Presbyterian.
UNF's first dual match comes Sept. 11 at in-state foe Bethune Cookman, before the Ospreys close tournament play Sept. 14-15 at the Winthrop Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. Host team Winthrop will be joined by Western Carolina and North Carolina A&T in the competition.
The remainder of the month of September sees the Ospreys on the road with Atlantic Sun matches against Northern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Florida Gulf Coast and cross-town rival Jacksonville.
North Florida hosts its first dual match Oct. 3 against Stetson in the first of three home contests that also feature matches versus Mercer (Oct. 5) and Kennesaw State (Oct. 6). Following a weekend road swing at USC Upstate and ETSU, UNF returns to Jacksonville for a four-game home stand beginning Oct. 16 against Bethune Cookman. The Ospreys will also host Lipscomb (Oct. 19), NKU (Oct. 20) and FGCU (Oct. 23) during the home stretch.
October closes with three consecutive road tilts at Kennesaw State, Mercer and Stetson. UNF opens November and concludes the regular season with a trio of home contests starting Nov. 3 versus Jacksonville, in another installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble. The Ospreys also host rematches with ETSU (Nov. 9) and Upstate (Nov. 10) in the final home stand.
The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament is slated for Nov. 15-17 in Nashville, Tenn., with the top six of 10 A-Sun teams advancing to the conference tournament.
Tickets for all home UNF Volleyball matches will go on sale beginning July 9 and can be purchased online at www.UNFOspreys.com.
