MACON, Ga. -- Junior Meggie Emons and senior Erin Nixon of the University of North Florida track & field teams were both named to the 2012 Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference team, as announced by the conference on Friday afternoon.
Emons, a health science major, boasts a 3.56 GPA as a junior. She competed for the Ospreys in the 5,000m and the 10,000m at the 2012 A-Sun Outdoor Track Championships, finishing sixth and third, respectively, and earning nine points for UNF. She also holds the third-fastest 10,000m time recorded in the conference this year at 36:16.35, as well as the sixth-fastest 5,000m time at 17:11.06.
Nixon, a senior English major with a 3.68 GPA, grabbed third place in the 5,000m at the A-Sun Championships and owns the fourth-fastest 5,000m time recorded conference-wide this year, at 17:05.25. She also grabbed top-ten finishes in the 1500m this year at both the USF Bull Invitational (fifth) and FSU Relays (sixth).
The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams this fall to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
The UNF track and field teams are next in action on May 11-12 when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational.
