JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball team closes out the regular season at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night in a critical doubleheader that will determine the Ospreys' postseason fate. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
UNF enters the doubleheader sitting in seventh in the Atlantic Sun standings, one spot out of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Ospreys need to win at least one game against the Eagles and get some help from some of the A-Sun's other teams in order to secure a spot in the tournament. If the Ospreys win one tomorrow, UNF needs to wind up in a three-way tie with Stetson or Lipscomb or a four-way tie with Belmont, Stetson and Lipscomb for a spot in the tournament. UNF could also get into the tournament if it sweeps Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson is swept by Jacksonville or Lipscomb goes 0-4 over the weekend. However, two losses, or only one UNF win and one win by either Stetson or Lipscomb, or a tie in the standings with either just Stetson or Lipscomb will keep the Ospreys out.
Thursday's doubleheader will also be UNF's second twinbill of the week. The Ospreys are coming off a pair of losses to No. 20 Florida State on Tuesday in their home finale. Richelle Raley drove in UNF's only run, ripping a hit down the right field line that brought home Danica Mandarano. UNF is an all-time 24-15 in its regular-season finales.
Florida Gulf Coast plays its first games in nearly two weeks on Thursday. The Eagles were last in action on Saturday, Apr. 21, splitting an Atlantic Sun series at USC Upstate. The Spartans took Game One 2-1, but Florida Gulf Coast came back for an 8-6 win in Game Two for the split. Florida Gulf Coast has won 10 of its last 12 games – all against A-Sun opponents – allowing the Eagles to lock up a spot in the A-Sun Tournament. The Eagles are currently second in the standings with a 12-4 record, behind 14-4 conference leader Kennesaw State, and will play for a share of the conference regular season title on Thursday. Chelsea Zgrabik leads the team in batting (.331), home runs (10) and hits (47) and is one of three players with 10+doubles on the year. In the circle, Shelby's Morgan's registered a 1.44 ERA in 160.0 innings and has struck out 122.
UNF holds an 8-6 advantage over the Eagles in the all-time series. Last year, the two teams split the series. However, in 2010 when the series was last in Fort Myers, UNF swept Florida Gulf Coast 2-1 and 4-2 on Mar. 27, 2010.
