JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Three members of the University of North Florida track and field teams have qualified to compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round, as announced by the NCAA on Thursday.
Sophomore Brianna Frazier will compete in the women's 200m and 400m, while sophomore David Shepherd and senior Christina King will compete in the men's and women's pole vault, respectively.
Frazier, who owns the UNF record in both of her events, will be using her qualifying time from this past weekend's Georgia Tech Invitational, a 23.56 that was good for fifth place. With that time, she is seeded 18th at the East Preliminary Round. She clocked four 200m times under 24 seconds this year, good for gold medals at the USF Bulls Invitational and the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track Championships.
Her qualifying time in the 400m, 52.25 seconds, was recorded at the Florida Relays. Though she finished fourth in the race, Frazier's mark was the third-fastest collegiate time recorded in the nation. She is currently seeded sixth.
King's qualifying mark of 4.00m (13-1 1/2), which has her seeded 22nd in the pole vault at the East Preliminary Round, came at the A-Sun Championships en route to her second consecutive gold medal in the event. The vault also broke her own school record. King earned three wins in the pole vault in 2012 and only recorded a mark below 3.80m on one occasion.
Shepherd earned his ticket by way of a 5.15m (16-10 3/4) mark at the FSU Relays, good for second place at the meet. The sophomore is seeded 32nd at the East Preliminary Round, though he is coming off a vault that earned him first place at the A-Sun Championships.
The NCAA East Preliminary Round will take place at Hodges Stadium on the campus of UNF on May 24-26. Further information regarding the meet and ticket purchasing, as well as a complete list of entrants can be found at the attached links.
