A-Sun Interview w/ Christina King
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Senior Christina King of the University of North Florida track and field team set a new personal and Atlantic Sun Conference record in the pole vault as she collected one of two golds for the Ospreys on the first day of the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hodges Stadium on Friday.
King's mark of 4.00m (13-1 1/2) broke her own school record and cleared the previous conference high by .30m. Sophomore Caleigh Boyington took second place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.71m (12-2), while freshman Chelsea Chandler finished fourth at 3.41m (11-2 1/4). All three vaulters set new personal bests.
"I think we had a great first day," Head Coach Mark VanAlstyne said. "Obviously the pole vaulters were fantastic today and I was also very proud of everyone in the 10,000."
Senior Andrea Bridges took home a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.62m (18-5 1/4), while junior Ashley Gonzalez grabbed sixth in both the shot put (12.26m) and the hammer throw (45.06m).
In the 100m prelims, junior Jasmine Jackson (12.08) and sophomores Raneisha Lamar (12.12) and Sharniece Supal (12.16) all qualified for tomorrow's finals.
The women found themselves in second place with 50 points at the end of the first day, just 14 points behind first-place Jacksonville after six scoring events.
For the men, sophomore David Shepherd completed the UNF pole vault sweep, taking first place with a mark of 4.91m (16-1 1/4), also a new A-Sun record. Freshman Ryan L'Heureux finished fourth in the event with a mark of 4.46m (14-7 1/2).
Sophomore Dante Bouldin grabbed a top-five finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.01, while senior Mike Strasser also finished fifth in a time of 31:58.32.
After the first day, the men sit in fifth place with 19 points, just six points back from Lipscomb, who sits in fourth after six events.
"I wish we could take this weather and use it again tomorrow, but we'll have to make do," VanAlstyne said. "We're right in the thick of things, so it should be fun."
Saturday's action will begin earlier than scheduled due to expected rain in the forecast for the evening. The men's decathlon and women's heptathlon will begin their final events at 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., respectively.
