
Women's Tennis' Berkenbrock Named A-Sun Player of the Year, Cohen Tabbed Coach of the Year

MACON, Ga. – University of North Florida women's tennis' Aline Berkenbrock was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, head coach Audra Cohen was tabbed Coach of the Year and all seven players earned All-Conference honors as voted on by the Atlantic Sun's head coaches and announced by the conference on Thursday.
Berkenbrock, Lorena Aviles and Danielle Day were named First-Team All-Conference, while Marina Cunningham and Rebeca Pereira earned spots on All-Freshman Team.
UNF's doubles teams – Aviles/Berkenbrock, Pereira/Simona Weymar and Day/Melanie Aguirre – swept the Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun doubles awards. Since the conference began recognizing All-Conference doubles teams in 2009, this is the first time a men's or women's program has swept the doubles honors.
In her first season, Cohen guided the Ospreys to a 14-4 overall record and a perfect 9-0 conference mark. It is the first time in UNF's Division I history in which the Ospreys posted an undefeated A-Sun record. UNF has won 10-straight, which includes five shutouts.
It is the second time Berkenbrock was named Player of the Year. She was previously named the conference's Player of the Year in 2010. Berkenbrock has gone 11-3 overall this spring and went a perfect 8-0 against Atlantic Sun opponents. She was a two-time A-Sun Player of the Week selection. The Sao Bernardo de Campo, Brazil-native has won her last eight matches – all on the No. 1 court. Berkenbrock has won her last eight matches in two sets and posted 6-0, 6-0 shutouts against both Florida Gulf Coast's Sarah Means and Mercer's Jennifer Lada.
In her first season at UNF, Aviles has tallied a 13-2 singles record, including 10-1 at the No. 2 spot. She was also 7-0 in singles in conference matches. All of Aviles' wins this spring have come in two sets and she takes an 11-match singles winning streak into this weekend's Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championships. She was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Mar. 14.
Day picks up her third-straight All-Conference honor for singles. It is the second-straight year in which she's earned First-Team All-Conference honors. Playing primarily at No. 3 singles this spring, Day's posted an 11-6 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. The Tampa, Fla.-native started the spring with a Flight 3 championship at the FGCU Invitational. She rattled off eight-straight singles wins from Mar. 16-Apr. 7, including a three-set win over ETSU's Marine Wieliczko.
Cunningham's had a solid start to her collegiate career. She was one of two freshman in the conference to go undefeated in Atlantic Sun matches, posting an 8-0 record. Overall, Cunningham was 12-4 on the season with a solid 8-2 performance on the No. 6 court. She is the winner of her last eight singles matches, which included 6-0, 6-0 shutouts of both Lipscomb's Samantha Bowman and Mercer's Sarah Hanna.
Pereira has tallied a 7-7 overall record and a 4-1 conference mark in her first collegiate season. She was 4-0 at No. 6 singles this season and has won five of her last six singles matches. Pereira posted a four-match winning streak from Mar. 16-29.
Doubles play has been a big role in the Ospreys' success this season. UNF was the only team to have all three of its doubles teams go undefeated against conference foes as Berkenbrock/Aviles, Weymar/Pereira and Day/Aguirre all posted 9-0 records. Additionally, the three doubles teams combined for a 39-9 overall record this season.
Playing at the No. 1 position, Berkenbrock and Aviles have recorded a 13-3 mark this season and are currently ranked No. 66 in the nation. The pair is the only Atlantic Sun doubles team to be ranked. Among Berkenbrock's and Aviles' wins this year was an 8-1 defeat of Irene Viana and Samantha Maddox at then-No. 70 College of Charleston on Feb. 12. Berkenbrock and Aviles also posted an 8-5 win over Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmerman from then-No. 10 Miami on Mar. 3.
Weymar and Pereira have formed a solid combination on the No. 2 court. The pair has won their last 10 matches and en route to a 14-3 overall record and 12-2 at No. 2 doubles. Weymar and Pereira have earned 8-0 shutouts in two of their last three matches, including one against Lipscomb's Danielle Hansen and Elizabeth Keevil and another against Mercer's Amanda Bertani and Melanie Schumilas.
For the second-straight year, Day and Aguirre have teamed up for All-Conference doubles honors. Day and Aguirre have rattled off 12-straight wins – all at No. 3 doubles. During their 12-match winning streak, the duo has outscored its opponents 97-25. Additionally, Day and Aguirre outscored the conference competition 72-10 in their nine doubles matches.
Also announced on Thursday was the All-Academic Team with Weymar earning a spot on the team. Majoring in Management, Weymar was one of eight selections to named All-Academic.
The Ospreys return to action at this weekend's Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championships. As the No. 1 seed, UNF has a first round bye and begins play on Saturday in the semfinals at 1 p.m. UNF faces the winner of Friday's match between No. 4 Stetson and No. 5 Kennesaw State.
