JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball head coach Mary Tappmeyer has announced the signing of Jada Bennett to a National Letter of Intent. Bennett joins Kianna Conner and Bre Crum as members of this year's signing class.
“Jada is a very athletic, big guard who will make a great addition to our program,” said Tappmeyer. “She has the ability to score from both inside and out and adds a rebounding mentality to our squad.”
Bennett was a key figure in Sherman High School (Texas) soaring to new heights in the last two years. After Sherman posted a 7-22 season in 2009-10, Bennett led the Lady Bearcats to back-to-back District 13-4A championships – a feat that no prior Sherman team has done – in her junior and senior seasons.
She's the two-time District 13-4A Offensive Player of the Year, averaging 12.0 points and six rebounds as a junior and 16 points and 7.5 rebounds as a senior. She earned First-Team All-Texomaland honors as a junior and senior and was a Second-Team All-Texomaland selection as a sophomore. Bennett was a three-time All-Tournament selection at the Sherman Holiday Tournament. She was named MVP of Sherman's basketball team as a junior and was an Al Hambrick All-Star participant as a senior.
“I'm looking forward to building a strong relationship with my teammates and coaches,” said Bennett. “I want to help Coach Tapp win a ring from the conference and go far. I am also looking forward to not only growing my skill and development on the basketball court, but also succeeding in the classroom. It is going to take a lot of work, but I'm ready for new beginnings and a great experience.”
“Jada was a key component to the success we had these past two years,” said Sherman head coach Monticee Williams. “She really pushed herself to become the standout player we needed her to be. Jada will definitely be an asset to the women's basketball program at UNF.”
Bennett was also a three-year member of Sherman's track and field team. As a junior, she qualified for Regionals in both the 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay.
Bennett, who is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, is the daughter of Dr. Robert and Sheryl Bennett.
