JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team took some time off from offseason workouts to give back to the community. The men's soccer team took part in the 2012 MuckRuckus MS Jacksonville, a 10K challenge course at the Taye Brown Regional Park Sports Complex.
The event was spearheaded by former North Florida men's soccer player Julian Botella (2010-11). Before competing or getting mucky for fun, each participant raised a minimum of $100 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
“The UNF Men's Soccer Team made a great impact as volunteers for the MuckRuckus MS Fundraiser,” Jason Henika, Community Outreach Coordinator stated. “They supported the event by helping with all volunteer assignments on Sunday as well they were the last volunteers to leave the site on Sunday. Coach Derrick, and the rest of the team were more than happy to stay until the job was done and the festival area was completely cleaned. Everything that they were asked to do they did and had no trouble completing. They are a great group of guys with big hearts, willing to go above and beyond to help those they know with MS and all others affected by it.
“The North Florida Chapter is very grateful for the support of the UNF Men's Soccer Team and could not have finished up the event as smoothly as we did without them,” Henika added. “We wish them luck the rest of the season and hope all their hard work pays off in soccer and in life.”
MuckRuckus MS Jacksonville, presented by Suddath, was expected to surpass prior years with more than 5,000 participants, volunteers, and spectators to raise this year's goal of $815,000 with proceeds moving towards a world free of MS. Bystanders were able to watch their friends and family-sometimes decked out in costume-get mucky within a lively festival atmosphere complete with food, beverages, music and more.
Funds raised from MuckRuckus MS Jacksonville benefited MS research and local programs and services at the North Florida Chapter for the more than 18,000 individuals affected by multiple sclerosis in the North Florida area.
