JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida picked up a 7-4 victory against Georgia Southern on Friday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium thanks to a five-run sixth inning. The Ospreys (6-3) led 2-1, but broke the game open with the five-run inning which featured home runs by
Ryan Roberson and
Alex Bacon.
North Florida recorded 11 hits on the night, scoring seven runs. The Ospreys did most of their damage in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on a pair of home runs. For the second straight game, Roberson belted a three-run home run. In addition, Bacon added a solo homer in the inning, marking the second consecutive game with a home run.
Four different UNF players finished with multiple hits.
Joe Wielbruda finished with a team-best three hits. He also scored a pair of runs on the night, tying with
Andrew Karmeris. A. Karmeris,
Tyler Marincov and
Michael Wesner each finished with the game with a pair of base hits. Roberson led all players with four RBI.
On the mound,
Michael Renner (2-1) picked up his second victory of the season. Renner surrendered four runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings. He fanned six batters, while walking just two.
Spencer Brown entered the game in relief. He recorded one out and surrendered a base hit before being relieved by
Tyler Moore. Moore earned his first career save, tossing the final 1.1 innings. The sophomore allowed a walk, but struck out two.
Georgia Southern was the first two score, plating a run in the top of the first inning. The Eagles used a double and a single to score a run and take an early 1-0 lead.
GSU's starting pitcher Chris Beck (1-1) kept UNF off the scoreboard until the fourth inning. Wielbruda singled through the right side of the infield to start things off for the Ospreys. A. Karmeris followed with a single down the left field line. Wielbruda came around to score on an RBI single by Marincov. A ground out moved the two runners into scoring position. Roberson scored A. Karmeris from third with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Ospreys a 2-1 advantage.
The score remained 2-1 until the sixth inning. Wielbruda reached base on an infield single to the shortstop. He moved to second base on a balk by Beck. A. Karmeris singled through the left side of the infield, giving UNF runners on the corners. With one out, Wesner singled to right field to score Wielbruda. With two runners on, Roberson hit his second three-run home run in as many nights to give UNF a 6-1 lead. After a groundout, Bacon hit a solo home run to left field to put the Ospreys in front 7-1.
Georgia Southern cut into the Ospreys lead in the top of the eighth inning. The Eagles started off the inning with a double to center field. A ground out moved the base runner to within 90 feet of home. GSU's Eric Phillips homered to left center field to trim the lead. The Eagles extended the inning with a double down the right field line. An RBI single cut the Osprey lead to 7-4. A fielder's choice and a ground out ended the inning.
The Ospreys were able to keep Georgia Southern off of the scoreboard in the ninth inning preserving the 7-4 victory.
North Florida and Georgia Southern continue the four-game series in Statesboro, Ga. with a pair of games. Saturday's game is slated for 6:00 p.m., while Sunday's game will be at 1:30 p.m.
