Roberson’s Walk-Off Home Run Propels Ospreys

Boxscore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the University of North Florida's Ryan Roberson hit the first pitch he saw over the batting cages in left field to give the Ospreys an 8-5 walk-off victory over Georgia Southern on Friday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.

Leading 5-3 heading into the ninth inning, the Ospreys (5-3) stumbled allowing a pair of Eagles' (5-4) runs to score, tying the game at five apiece.  In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Karmeris laced a base hit to third base to start the rally for UNF.  With two outs, Bryan Mathews followed with a walk to give the Ospreys a pair of bases runners.  Roberson wasted little time, blasting the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to give North Florida an 8-5 walk-off win.

For Roberson, the home run was the first of the season and the second of his career.  His lone home run prior to the game with Georgia Southern came against USF on March 3, 2010.  Roberson finished the game with the Eagles with a team-best five RBI.  He was one of four Osprey players to record multiple hits in the game.

Alex Bacon, Andrew Karmeris and Joe Wielbruda each finished the game with two hits apiece.  A. Karmeris scored a team-best two runs in the game.  Bacon hit his first home run of the season – a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.  Bacon added a two-RBI single in the third to finish the game with three RBI.

On the mound, Kyle Westwood earned a no decision in his second start of the year.  The hurler tossed 7.0 innings allowing just a pair of runs on 10 hits in a quality start for the Ospreys.  Westwood registered a career-best eight strikeouts while walking just two batters.  During one stretch, Westwood fanned four consecutive batters, which tied Nick Allbritton for the most consecutive strikeouts this season.

Westwood gave way to Kyle Finch, who surrendered a solo home run and a double before being relieved by Chandler Jagodzinski.  The sidearm pitcher worked 1.1 innings surrendering a pair of bases hits.  He was charged with two runs en route to a no decision.  Jagodzinski did not walk a batter and struck out one.

Tyler Moore earned the victory for the Ospreys.  The sophomore tossed 0.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out a batter.

Georgia Southern was the first team to strike, scoring a run in the top of the first inning.  Back-to-back singles started the game and left the Eagles with runners on the corners.  Westwood induced a double play for the first two outs of the inning, but GSU was able to score on the play.  Westwood slammed the door on the Eagles with his first strikeout of the game.

North Florida responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs.  With one out, Wielbruda doubled to left field for his first extra base hit of the year.  A. Karmeris followed with a walk and the two runners advanced on a ground out.  With two on and two outs, Michael Wesner was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Roberson put the Ospreys in front with a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Leading 2-1, UNF used a solo home run from Bacon to increase its lead to two runs.  The home run was Bacon's first of the season and his 10th of his career.

The Ospreys pushed their lead to 5-1 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Tyler Marincov led off the inning with an infield single to the shortstop.  Wesner followed with a single through the right side of the infield.  Roberson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.  With two outs, Bacon scored Marincov and Wesner with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Georgia Southern trimmed the deficit in the top of the sixth inning.  With one out, the Eagles used a double to left center field to place a runner in scoring position.  GSU used a single to move the lead runner to third base.  Georgia Southern used an RBI groundout to score a run and cut the Ospreys' lead to 5-2.

The Eagles received a solo home run from Casey Kicklighter in the start of the eighth inning to narrow the margin to 5-3.

GSU completed the comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning.  With one out, Georgia Southern used back-to-back singles to start a rally.  The Ospreys went to the bullpen and Moore came in to close out the game.  The sophomore struck out the first batter he faced, but surrendered a two-out double to Kicklighter to knot the score at 5-5 and set up Roberson's ninth inning heroics.

North Florida and Georgia Southern continue the four-game tilt with a game on Friday, March 2, at 6:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.  The final two games of the series will be played at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro, Ga.
