MACON, Ga. – University of North Florida basketball standout Parker Smith was named a second-team All-Atlantic Sun selection as announced by the conference office following a vote of the league's head coaches.
Smith, a junior sharpshooter from Gainesville, Ga., becomes just the second player in UNF program history to earn all-conference recognition.
“It's definitely an honor for our program to have a player receive this recognition,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “Parker has been a great player since his arrival on campus and more importantly he has been a super teammate and representative of UNF in every aspect. With the gift he has been blessed with, he is dangerous in so many aspects of our offense. Additionally, to his credit Parker has really learned and improved tremendously both defensively and in his rebounding.”
Bolstered by his 46-point performance against Mercer last week, Smith finished the regular season as the A-Sun's leading scorer at 17.0 points per game. He also topped the league in free throw percentage (80.6) and three-pointers made (3.6). Smith tallied double digits in 16 of 18 A-Sun games this season including six with 20 or more. He was twice named conference Player of the Week.
Smith, who began his collegiate career at Tennessee State, eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career this season while also establishing new UNF single game marks for points (46), three-pointers made (11) and a new single season record with 91 treys this season.
UNF's Alain Laroche was named All-ASun second team in 2005-06 and Andy Diaz garnered All-Freshman honors in 2009-10.
The Ospreys return to the hardwood Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against ETSU in opening round action of the General Shale Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Mercer's University Center. UNF finished with a program best tie for fourth in the regular season and earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament. North Florida's 16 overall wins and 10 A-Sun victories were both program bests.
