Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tournament Seeding. Barrel point. Bragging Rights. Those are all at stake tomorrow when the University of North Florida women's basketball team takes on cross-town rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble at Swisher Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
The game is the regular-season finale for both teams and will determine some of the seeding for next week's General Shale Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championships. A UNF win and the Ospreys lock up the No. 4 seed and will play Kennesaw State. However a Jacksonville win could have the Ospreys at either No. 4 or No. 5 and facing either the Dolphins or Kennesaw State depending on the results the remaining Atlantic Sun games.
The winner of tomorrow's game will also earn its school a barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble. Heading into tonight's men's basketball game between UNF and Jacksonville, the Ospreys lead the Dolphins 6-3. UNF's women's team already earned a barrel point by defeating the Dolphins 51-36 in this season's earlier match up on Dec. 3, 2010.
UNF has won its last three games and are coming off a series sweep of Mercer and Kennesaw State last weekend. Brittany Kirkland had her third 20-point game of the season during last Saturday's win over Kennesaw State, scoring a season-high 23. The Ospreys have come on strong during the month of February and enter Saturday with a 4-2 record this month.
Jacksonville has won three of its last four, including last Saturday's 84-78 win over Mercer. However, the Dolphins have lost their last two at Swisher Gymnasium and haven't won on that court since defeating USC Upstate 80-72 on Jan. 12. Jacksonville's leading scorers for the last eight games have registered at least 15 points and a quartet of Dolphins average double digits in scoring. Crystal Bell, who will be one of three seniors honored prior to tomorrow's game, leads the way with 13.6 ppg. Jade Cargill, who averages 10.1 ppg, leads the team in rebounds with 8.2 rpg.
Jacksonville leads the all-time series 9-6 and is 5-1 when the series is on its home court. However, UNF swept last season's regular-season series.
