FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek knocked off the top doubles pairing from the University of Southern California - the four-time defending NCAA Champions - before falling in the second round of the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday evening.
In the morning match, the duo did not face a single break point on their way to an 8-5 victory in their victory over Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson of USC. Buerchner and Nemcsek will face Chris Camillone and David Holiner of Texas in this evening's second round.
"I'm proud of Moritz and Norbert. It takes a lot of guts to take down the top doubles team from the squad that has won four straight NCAA titles. To not face a single break point all match against a pair of excellent returners is pretty impressive," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said.
In the evening, the pair faced off against Chris Camillone and David Holiner of Texas, who had not played a first-round match, and fell in an 8-6 decision.
"Texas did a great job of holding serve tonight, we just didn't have any looks at a break," Schaechterle said. "We still have two more guaranteed matches and every win against the elite competition here gives us a better chance to make NCAA individuals in May."
The tournament features top doubles teams from across the country. No UNF tennis player has ever taken part in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships which are hosted in Flushing, N.Y. at the site of the U.S. Open.
Consolation matches in the doubles bracket will begin on Friday.
