Buerchner Advances to Second Round of ITA All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. -- Senior Moritz Buerchner advanced to the second round of the 2012 ITA Men's All-Americans Championships to lead the way for the University of North Florida men's tennis team on Monday evening.
Buerchner, who was drawn into the first round of qualifying for the second year in a row, Marek Marksoo of Sacramento State, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to move into the second round. Last year, Buerchner advanced to the final round of qualifying after becoming the first UNF player to ever play in the ITA All-Americans.
Buerchner will need to win three more matches to advance into the 64-player main draw, which begins in the second half of this week. Two rounds of matches will be played tomorrow. Buerchner's second-round match, against Leonard Stakhovsky of Oklahoma, will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Over the weekend, two other Ospreys competed in the Pre-Qualifying portion of the tournament. Sophomore Norbert Nemcsek had the best showing, advancing to the final round of pre-qualifying before falling to Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 4-6. Senior Leonardo Nahar took David Kelleher of Texas-San Antonio to three sets before falling in his first-round match, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6.
"I'm really proud of how Norbert played this weekend, it's as good as I've seen him play in his career," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "He best three very high-quality opponents and battled against a top-50 player in the final round."
Nemcsek grabbed victories over Matthias Kidler of USC Upstate (6-2, 6-7, 7-5), Eric Sock of Nebraska (6-4, 7-5) and Cristian Gonazalez-Mendez of Florida State (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) before falling in the final round. A victory in the finals would have advanced him into the qualifying round.
