TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team opens the dual portion of its scheduled on Wednesday when the Ospreys travel to No. 18 Florida State.
“The girls have worked extremely hard and are excited and prepared for a tough battle tomorrow at FSU,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “We will have the opportunity to win at every position, so if we go out there and believe in the hard work we have put it, the results will follow.”
UNF was last in action two-and-a-half weeks ago at the FGCU Invitational. The Ospreys captured two individual titles and one doubles championship. Danielle Day and Simona Weymar brought back the Flight 3 and Flight 5 singles championships, respectively. Day and doubles partner Melanie Aguierre were also the Flight 2 doubles champions.
Wednesday's match is the first of three-straight road matches for the Ospreys. UNF also travels to UNC Wilmington (Feb. 11) and College of Charleston (Feb. 12) to begin the dual season.
Florida State enters the match with a 2-1 record. The Seminoles opened the dual season with a 6-1 win against UCF on Jan. 21 and were most recently in action at last weekend's National Team Indoor Championships. Florida State split on the weekend, defeating No. 56 Ohio State in the first round but falling 4-3 to No. 37 Ole Miss in the second round. Individually, both Carolina De los Santos and Leyla Erkan ride 3-0 singles records heading into Wednesday's match. De los Santos has gone 1-0 at No. 4 and 2-0 at No. 5 singles, while Erkan is 2-0 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 4.
During the fall season, UNF and Florida State competed at the same tournament just once. Both teams took part in the ITA Southeast Regional with the only meeting between two players taking place in the singles consolation championship. Aline Berkenbrock topped Erkan 6-3, 6-1.
Match time on Wednesday is scheduled for 3 p.m. The match is currently set to take place at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. However, rain is in Wednesday's forecast for Tallahassee. In the case of rain, the match will be moved to the Indoor Tennis Center.
