JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sophomore forward Carolina Lencina scored her second and third goals of the season to lead the University of North Florida women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Mercer on Friday evening. The win snapped the Ospreys' three-game losing streak.
The Ospreys seemed to control the game at the outset, limiting Mercer's chances at goal and making multiple pushes into the Bears' territory before Lecina broke onto the scoresheet in the 22nd minute. The sophomore took a turn around her defender just outside the 18-yard line and fired a laser over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Cagney Valloch to put UNF up 1-0.
Mercer made multiple forays into UNF territory for the rest of the half, but could not find the back of the net. At halftime, the Ospreys trailed in shots 4-1 and each team had just one corner kick.
After the break, however, UNF resumed control, as Lencina completed her brace in the 65th minute. Sophomore forward Lauren Hopfensperger dribbled down the length of the right side before firing a low cross into the box that Lencina was able to poke inside the far post to double the Ospreys' lead.
As the Bears pushed forward in search of a goal, UNF forwards capitalized on Mercer errors to put the game out of reach. In the 83rd minute, freshman midfielder Jill Holdsworth jumped on a loose ball, took off on a breakaway and fired a shot around the Mercer goalkeeper to give the Ospreys a 3-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, Hopfensperger finished the scoring by jumping in front of a pass between two defenders and scoring an almost identical one-on-one goal from about 18 yards out.
“This is a big win against very good Mercer team,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “It shows again just how big it is to be playing at home.”
The offensive outburst is the Ospreys' highest-scoring game since a 5-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Aug. 21, the last time UNF played at home.
Coming into the game, Mercer had given up just seven goals in their 10 games. The only other time they had given up more than a single goal in regulation came in a 4-0 loss to Florida State earlier this month.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey tallied four saves for the Ospreys to earn her fourth career shutout.
UNF is next in action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Kennesaw State to Hodges Stadium for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
