9/2/2011 9:59:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
BOONE, N.C. – The University of North Florida women's cross country team opened their season with a victory Friday evening, taking first place at the 12-team Covered Bridge Invitational.
“We were planning on running a little bit conservative,” Head Coach Mark VanAlstyne. “But the ladies found themselves in the lead around the mile mark and just decided to go for it.”
The Ospreys won in dominating fashion, scoring just 37 points on the day. Second-place Wake Forest tallied 74 points, while Florida State finished third with 89.
Senior Erin Nixon led the way for UNF, taking runner-up honors with a 5,000-meter time of 18:40.2, with junior Meggie Emons just a half second behind her in third place.
Junior Shelby Kittrell was next for the Ospreys, finishing sixth with a time of 18:51.5. Ecaterina Gheorghiu, also a junior, was 11th at 18:59.1, while senior Kayla Conrad rounded out the scoring for UNF in 15th place with a time of 19:17.5.
“I think we did a fantastic job of running with a pack,” VanAlstyne said. “I'm always happiest as a coach when we're running extremely well as a team.”
The Ospreys will next see the course when they compete in the Seminole Invitational on Friday, September 23, with races starting at 6 p.m.
