WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team couldn't quite come back from a first-half two-goal deficit, falling to Richmond on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1.
The Spiders netted two goals within the first 33 minutes to put UNF in a hole they could not climb out of, despite grabbing a score of their own in the 80th minute.
“We sort of got ourselves into trouble with that first half,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “We just couldn't find our way back with the time we had.”
Becca Wann got the scoring started in the 17th minute for Richmond, heading home a cross from Natalie Leclair to put the Spiders up 1-0. In the 33rd minute, Erin Layne doubled Richmond's lead when she pounced on a corner kick that had been knocked around in the box and buried the chance inside the right post.
The Spiders outshot UNF 7-3 in the first half and owned a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.
In the second half, the Ospreys fought back. UNF tallied six shots compared to Richmond's four while holding the Spiders without a corner and winning two of their own.
Sophomore forward Carolina Lincina gave the Ospreys a chance at the comeback by scoring a beautiful goal in the 80th minute. Junior forward Michele Larrinaga played a cross in from the left side that Lincina was able to meet perfectly, giving Richmond goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco no opportunity for a save.
The Ospreys, however, were unable to equalize in the final ten minutes. Sophomore forward Lauren Hopfensperger had UNF's best chance in the 86th minute, when her shot forced Pacheco to make her fifth save of the day to preserve the victory.
“We've played very well lately after we fall behind,” Hamilton said. “We just need to make sure we learn to play that way before getting behind.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey had three saves for UNF in the loss.
The loss will drop the Ospreys to 4-5-1 on the year, while Richmond is now 5-3-2.
Having completed its non-conference schedule, UNF will kick off its Atlantic Sun slate when it travels to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. match.
