WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Sophomore midfielder Heather Botelho scored the only goal of the game to lead the University of North Florida women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over North Carolina-Wilmington on Friday night. It was the Ospreys' third consecutive win by a single goal.
UNF played one of its best defensive games of the year, allowing just one shot on goal for the game, the fewest the team has given up all season. It was the Ospreys' first shutout since their 5-0 home victory over Coastal Carolina on Aug. 21, a span of seven matches.
“I think we played very well against a good, athletic team,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “We can be very happy getting a road win against a quality team.”
Botelho provided all the offense the Ospreys needed when she found the back of the net in the 26th minute. Sophomore midfielder Keara Murphy delivered a pass into the box that Botelho controlled before launching a shot from the right side that sailed over the head of UNCW goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter before dropping into the far corner of the net.
Although the Seahawks outshot UNF 9-8 for the game, the Ospreys found their target much more often than their counterparts from Wilmington. While UNF forced six saves out of Hunter, sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey only needed to make a single save for the Ospreys on the evening.
That save could not have come at a better time, however, as Dorsey charged out to smother a breakaway attempt from UNCW forward Stephanie Rose with just 2:23 left on the clock to preserve her third career shutout.
“This was a great win for the team,” Hamilton said. “It's the kind of game that makes the whole team better.”
With the victory, UNF is now 4-4-1 on the season, while the Seahawks fell to 2-5.
The Ospreys will next be in action on Sunday when they take on Richmond in the second game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Wlimington.
