JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team took some time off of the field to give back to the community. In November, the Ospreys participated in a pair of community service events, working at the “Kickin' It for Refugees” event and the holiday food drive for Nemours Children's Clinic.
On Saturday, Nov. 19 on the North Florida campus, members of the men's soccer team took part in the “Kickin' It for Refugees” event. The Sport Management Professional Preparation Institute (SMPPI), a student organization sponsored by the UNF Sport Management Department, hosted an event in support of international refugee children living in the Jacksonville area. The event coincided with the UNF Reads program and the book Outcasts United. The multifaceted event began with a Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night at the Town Center, continued with soccer equipment and clothing drives at North Florida Market Days and ended with a soccer fun day on the south recreation field. It was there that the Ospreys men's soccer team joined the fun by coaching, showing and using their soccer skills with the many children in attendance.
The following Monday some of the team visited Nemours Children's Clinic to help with the holiday food drive. The team helped sort the generous food donations for families in need of a Thanksgiving meal during difficult times.
“It was an honor and pleasure to help the staff and families at Nemours who clearly do so much for others and we hope to do more in the future,” head coach Derek Marinatos remarked.
