MACON, Ga. – In advance of the upcoming Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championship, the conference office announced Tuesday the 2011 Atlantic Sun All-Conference honorees as voted on by the league's head coaches. UNF junior Paige Pridgeon and freshman Casey Giovanazzi were among those athletes recognized.
Pridgeon, an outside hitter from Tallahassee, Fla., was named a second-team selection marking the third consecutive season she has earned postseason recognition from the A-Sun. She currently leads the team and ranks fifth in conference in kills at 3.32 per set. Pridgeon, who became just the ninth player in UNF program history with 1,000 career kills, also ranks third on the team in digs with 2.76.
“Paige has been a steady force for our team,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “Her consistent passing and defense has kept us in matches. In addition, she is an extremely effective offensive performer with the ability to terminate the ball at a high level.”
A setter from Baltimore, Md., Giovannazi earned a spot on the A-Sun All-Freshmen squad. She currently ranks fifth in the conference for assists at 9.21 per set and is just 33 assists shy of 1,000 for the season. In addition, she is tied for second on the team in service aces with 20.
“Casey has made a huge impact on the overall performance of our team,” added Campbell. “Her knowledge of the game is beyond that of a freshman setter. She is a natural leader and a very team-focused player.”
In addition to the Osprey's honored duo, junior libero Nicole Baran gained inclusion on the league's inaugural Academic All-Conference team.
Baran, a native of St. Augustine, Fla., boasts a 3.67 GPA in mathematics and is the team leader in digs with 479 on the year. She currently ranks fourth in the A-Sun with 4.24 digs per set.
“Nicole sets a great example for our team and athletic department in her commitment to academics,” Campbell said. “Her passion for math is inspiring. Her analytical skills show up in her advanced knowledge of the game. She is a tremendous leader for our team as one of the captains.”
North Florida begins play at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championship in opening round play Thursday against Florida Gulf Coast in Lipscomb's Allen Arena. All games of the championship will be broadcasted for free on ASun.TV.
