SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Sophomore defender Kathryne Husted tallied her third and fourth goals of the season to lead the University of North Florida women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon. It was the Ospreys' third win in four games.
“It was a big win for us in terms of keeping our momentum going,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “It's important to get these victories as we head towards the tournament.”
Husted, who celebrated her birthday on Friday, started the scoring early in the first half. In the 12th minute, junior defender Martha Tracey fielded a corner and played a ball to Husted's feet just outside the penalty area. Husted took a dribble and fired a shot over Upstate goalkeeper Sarah Plantz's outstretched hands and into the side netting to put the Ospreys up 1-0.
The remainder of the first period was, for the most part, evenly-matched and the teams went into the break with just the one goal on the scoreboard. Both squads tallied six shots in the opening half.
After the break, however, the Ospreys controlled the tempo of the game. They forced four saves out of Plantz within the first 20 minutes of the half before Husted completed her brace to put the game out of reach. In the 66th minute, after the Spartans failed to entirely clear a UNF shot, the sophomore corralled the ball about 30 yards from the goal, took a touch and fired a shot past Plantz to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.
UNF controlled the entirety of the second half, outshooting the Spartans 14-6 and accumulating eight corner kicks to Upstate's one.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Beninati recorded five saves for the Ospreys en route to her first career shutout. Plantz put forth quite an effort for Upstate, making eight saves in the loss.
“These conference wins, especially on the road, become more and more important as you get later in the season,” Hamilton said. “Hopefully we can keep this momentum going this weekend at home.”
With the win, UNF moves to 7-8-1 on the season and 3-3 in Atlantic Sun play. Upstate falls to 2-12-1 with an 0-5 mark in conference play. The Ospreys are now tied for fourth in the A-Sun standings with three games remaining in the regular season. Belmont, the other team tied for fourth place and the Ospreys' next opponent, has played one fewer game than UNF.
The Ospreys are next in action as they celebrate Family Weekend with two home games this coming weekend. UNF will face Belmont at 7 p.m. on Friday evening before facing Lipscomb at 1 p.m. on Sunday for Senior Day.
