GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team opened up the 2011-12 season with a solid showing on the first day of the Florida Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Pool in Gainesville, Fla.
North Florida concluded the day in seventh place, behind meet host Florida, Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, Miami, Florida Atlantic and FIU. Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern rounded out the scoring on the day.
The Ospreys started the day with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of freshmen, Rebeca Bernard, Maria Bernard, Christine Kemp and Natalie McCallum posted a time of 1:40.13 as the top finishers for UNF in the event. Freshmen Lissa Janowicz, Bridget Woods and Emily Wynn teamed with junior Sara Evans for their first collegiate event.
In the 500 freestyle, Kemp was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys. The freshman came in with a time of 5:07.93.
Woods and Evans finished back-to-back in the 200 individual medley. Woods posted a time of 2:09.80, while Evans was nine hundreds of a second off of the pace at 2:09.89.
In the 400 medley relay, the UNF team of Kristina Alexiou, Woods, McCallum and Kemp took the top finish among Osprey relay teams with a time of 3:59.92. The team of senior Gala Poon, Evans, Janowicz and R. Bernard finished the event four spots back.
In the diving competition, junior Julia Moomaw was the Ospreys' top finisher with 214.30 points in 1-meter diving. Freshman Monica Rice recorded 193.45 points in her first collegiate competition.
