JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Sophomore forward Carolina Lencina's first half goal ended up being for naught as the University of North Florida women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at East Tennessee State on Friday evening.
“It was a difficult loss for us against a very good team,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “It was a game where we thought we could have gotten a better result, but we just needed to put away our chances a little better.
While UNF sophomore forward Lauren Hopfensperger forced two saves out of ETSU goalkeeper Caitlin Gaughan within the first seven minutes of play, the Bucs made their first shot count as they broke onto the scoresheet just three minutes later.
Forward Ramey Kerns dribbled in from the left before slotting a pass through the UNF defense that midfielder Genna Petersen was able to poke past Osprey goalkeeper Megan Dorsey to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Despite the early setback, Lencina equalized things for UNF just nine minutes later. The defending A-Sun Player of the Week beat her defender up the left side and fired a shot around Gaughan to grab her fourth goal of the season and even the game at 1-1 in the 19th minute.
Although the Ospreys controlled the remainder of the first period, outshooting ETSU 7-2 before halftime, they could not find a go-ahead goal. After UNF sophomore midfielder Alexa Raborn's attempt struck the post in the 43rd minute, the teams went into the half tied at 1-1.
Following the break, the Bucs peppered the UNF goal with shots. They had already tallied seven second-half shots when Morgan Thomas was able to put ETSU ahead for good in the 79th minute. Freshman Ellis Parsons began the play when she guided a cross in from the left side that Thomas was able to finish from close range to give the Bucs the 2-1 victory.
Dorsey recorded three saves for UNF on the game, while Gaughan tallied four for the Bucs
“It's kind of getting to crunch time for us,” Hamilton said. “We really need to grab a few more wins before the end of the season.”
With the loss, the Ospreys fall to 6-8-1 on the season, with a 2-3 mark in Atlantic Sun play that puts them sixth in the conference standings. ETSU improves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in-conference, remaining in second place behind Jacksonville.
The Ospreys now have just four games remaining in the regular season. The top six teams will make the Atlantic Sun tournament, with the top two teams receiving byes into the semifinals.
UNF is next in action Sunday afternoon, as they travel to USC Upstate for a 2 p.m. conference showdown.
