Postmatch Interview (Coach Linda Hamilton)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A volleyed goal from junior midfielder Kathryne Husted proved to be all the University of North Florida women's soccer team needed to grab a 1-0 victory over Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon. It was the Ospreys' first victory over KSU since 2002.
“It's always good to get any conference win,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “But it is especially important to win and establish ourselves at home.”
Husted's goal came in the 24th minute, after the Ospreys had already threatened several times with runs deep into KSU territory. Sophomore forward Carolina Lencina started the play when she spun off her defender in the right corner and managed to deliver a bouncing pass to the top of the box. Husted controlled the ball and, while the ball was still falling to the ground, pounded the ball over KSU goalkeeper Mel Hutto's hands and into the upper right corner of the goal.
For the remainder of the game, the Ospreys continued to see away with each KSU foray into their defending third. Senior defender Sam Keyes had the game's biggest defensive play when she cleared Julia Nelson's open-net shot off the endline to maintain UNF's one-goal lead.
In the 79th minute, junior forward Michele Larrinaga came close to putting the game away for the Ospreys when she received a pass about 12 yards from the net. Larrinaga quickly turned her defender and fired a shot that Hutto was just able to get a hand to and push away.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey was crucial in keeping the Owls off the scoreboard, stopping breakaway shots from point-blank range on two separate occasions. Dorsey made a total of three saves to earn her second straight shutout.
The victory broke UNF's eight-game losing streak against Kennesaw State, dating back to the Ospreys' 2002 victory on penalty kicks.
“It's definitely good for our team's confidence going forward to get that kind of win,” Hamilton said. “We had a pretty good weekend that we can learn a lot from.”
Hutto recorded four saves for KSU, including the close-range parry of Larrinaga's shot to keep the game at 1-0. Midfielder Katrina Frost led the Owls' offense racking up six shots on the game.
With the win, the Ospreys move to 6-7-1 on the season and even their Atlantic Sun record at 2-2. KSU falls to 5-6-1 (1-3 A-Sun) following the loss.
UNF is next in action on Friday (Oct. 7) evening when they hit the road again for a 7 p.m. match at East Tennessee State.
