JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team hosted its second annual Osprey Summer Spike beach volleyball tournament fundraiser last weekend as Jacksonville Beach played host to 103 teams over the course of the two day event.
“We had a great turnout for the Second Annual Summer Spike Beach Volleyball tournament,” said UNF head volleyball coach Kevin Campbell. “We were filled to capacity both Saturday and Sunday at all 11 nets on Jax Beach. It was a beautiful weekend at the beaches. We had great fortune with the weather and while the rest of Jacksonville experienced heavy rain, we were lucky to only receive minimal out at the courts.”
On Saturday 17 women's teams and 29 men's teams competed in the Open, “AA” and “A” divisions. Winning the women's “Open” was the duo of Tracey Blair and Brittany O'Neil while Jill Cox and Robin Mignerey finished in second.
The women's “AA” title was captured by Lindsey Jones and Bailey Lindner with Amanda Liguori and Cari Whitmire coming in second. Sandra Dawson and Jane Conner grabbed the “A” division while Elizabeth Warren and Sandra Gottchalk were the runners-up.
On the men's side, Lon Wallace and Ole Juve won the “Open” division and Kibbee Jelks and Chris Watson finished second. The men's “AA” title was won by Shane Kitterman and Charlie Giorlando with runners-up Justin Barrett and Chad Gallahan. Jonathon Ruiz and Matthew Telson took the “A” crown and Scott Totzke and Alex Zavithsanos finished second.
Sunday's completion brought 48 juniors teams out to Jax Beach with 25 teams in the 13-15 division. There were 13 teams in the 16-18 group while 10 teams competed in the 10-12 division. There were also several coed teams out for Sunday's competition.
“We had a record number of juniors' teams competing with 48 total,” Campbell said. “With beach volleyball possibly becoming an NCAA sport, which UNF fully endorses, it was nice to see that number of juniors playing beach volleyball here in the Jacksonville area. It was a very festive atmosphere and the support for Beach Volleyball and for UNF Athletics was a great thing to see.”
UNF paired with the First Coast Beach Series and director Chris Morrisey who ran the tournament.
“Chris was a tremendous help,” said Campbell. “He really ran a smooth tournament and made sure game play flowed.”
