Women’s Cross Country Voted to Repeat as Conference Runner-Up

MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its 2010 A-Sun Women's Cross Country Coaches Preseason Poll on Wednesday and the University of North Florida took second. In a vote by the league head coaches, the Ospreys collected a total of 98 points.

“I think the No. 2 ranking is pretty representative of where we should be,” head cross country coach Mark VanAlstyne said. “Having said that, I've been impressed the first week back in practice. Some people have really come in fit and they look like they are ready to step up and compete on the conference level.”

North Florida tied its best finish in school history last season when the squad placed second after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll. The Ospreys return last season's Freshman of the Year, Shelby Kittrell – she took fourth at last year's A-Sun Championships and paced three Ospreys on the All-Freshmen team.

Defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion and “River City” rival Jacksonville enters 2010 as the favorites to repeat, collecting nine of the 11 possible first-place votes. USC Upstate was picked to finish third.

The 2010 Atlantic Sun Championships, hosted by USC Upstate at Milliken Research Park, will be held on October 31. The course hosted the 1995 NCAA Division II National Championships and NCAA South Region Championships in 2004 and 2005.
