JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's and women's cross country teams announced its 2010 schedule. The schedule consists of four meets before the Ospreys begin postseason competition.
“We can't wait to get started on our second full campaign in Division I,” Mark VanAlstyne, Assistant Athletic Director / Director of Track & Field stated. “Last year's results demonstrated how competitive we can be at this level but also left us wanting more. Our schedule this year reflects our primary goals for the season. It is challenging, but it also addresses the need to build throughout the season in order to be our best for the ASUN and NCAA South Region meets.”
UNF begins the 2010 season with a meet in Jacksonville as the Ospreys travel across town to compete in the JU Short Course Duals. The meet hosted by crosstown and conference rival Jacksonville is slated to start at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3.
The Ospreys then head to Gainesville, Fla. for the Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18. The meet is slated for 8 a.m. and hosted by the University of Florida. North Florida competes in Florida State's Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8.
UNF completes the 2010 regular season at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. The meet will serve as a test for the Ospreys as USC Upstate is hosting the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The A-Sun Championships will be on Saturday, Oct. 30 in Spartanburg, S.C.
The NCAA South Regional Championships are slated for Saturday, Nov. 13 in Birmingham, Ala. and the NCAA Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 22 in Terra Haute, Ind.
Last season, the men's and women's cross country teams both saw third-place finishes in the Atlantic Sun Championships. Since joining the A-Sun, the men's team enjoyed their best finish in the conference with William Pearce garnering Second Team All-Conference, finishing tenth and claiming the top spot for the Ospreys the second year in a row. For the women, Shelby Kittrell put up a season best time of 18:02 in the 5k race. Along with her fourth place finish, Kittrell was garnered Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference and to the All-Freshman Team accolades.
In UNF's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships the women finished 11th and the men placed 21st overall.
